by story-teller artist Reshma Valliappan
Val Resh is painting a collection of human experiences on 1512 canvas rolls, that when combined, will cover the field size of The Motera Stadium in Gujarat -a whopping 162 yards x 170 yards!
After 9 years of advocating art as a tool for healing in mental health, Reshma Valliappan wants to take it a solid notch higher. Though a daunting task, she aims to collect visual stories of anguish and awakening crowd sourced from people the world over. Resh will then paint these narratives in her unique style to evoke a sense of our shared human consciousness.
Inspired by many different artist before her, Val Resh seeks to display the collection at the largest cricket stadium in the world:
The Motera Stadium, also known as The Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium in India.
Sale proceeds of the paintings will be donated towards the educational needs of children with disability, mental illness, intellectual & neuro-diverse groups and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds who have dropped out from school in order to financially support their families.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. I AM NOT AN ARTIST. HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Art does not necessarily mean painting. There are many different creative ways to express yourself. Here is a list:
FINE ART: Original painting, drawing, doodles, comic, sketch, sculpture
PERFORMANCE ART: For dancers, martial artist or any other movement expression, you can send in a single still visual photograph of yourself.
CRAFT: flower arrangements, collage, origami, quilling, embroidery, pottery, rock painting, face/body painting, tattoo work, etc. are acceptable as long as the design is an original creation and not a copy of another artist.
WORD ART: Words, calligraphy are acceptable as long as it has an original image with it.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Original compositions only. Selfies are not acceptable.
WRITTEN WORK: Poetry, rap, songs, short stories or any original writing.
MUSIC: Original compositions are welcome but can only be used for our videography purposes.
2. IS THERE A REQUIRED SIZE OR RESOLUTION FOR THE IMAGES?
Images can be of any size, as long as they are not blurry. A good resolution makes the process faster, so it is recommended at 100-300 dpi resolution if possible. Works should not be published, contracted, or copyrighted elsewhere as this will create a problem for the project, as sale proceeds will be donated to charity.
3. CAN I SUBMIT AN IMAGE WITH A WATERMARK ON IT?
Watermarks are mostly for protecting the rights of the artist and image. If you feel uncomfortable/unsure, we will accept it with the watermark. Although for promotion, publishing in our sponsors e-zine, a watermark does not do justice to the image. At all points, every image/entry will credit the participant so long as name is provided.
4. I DO NOT HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH/DISABILITY/OTHER CONDITIONS. CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Yes, most certainly. This is open to everyone. Just type 'none' in the form.
5. HOW WILL THE PROJECT BE USING MY SONGS/MUSIC?
Songs and music that are of original pieces will be used for social media promotions. It will also be played in the background as Resh paints, so that she can feel your energy and reflect it into the collection of paintings. Credits will given as we do for all submissions.
6. DO I NEED TO SUBMIT AN AUDIO/VIDEO FILE FOR THAT?
This is up to you. If the file size is too large to upload, you can share a link in the 'tell us about your expression'
7. WILL MY WORK BE USED ELSEWHERE?
Only for the purposes of this project. As the artist, you hold all your rights otherwise. Do read the Terms & Conditions to understand better.
8. WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?
The final deadline is 26th May 2021. There is a rotating deadline each month based on the completion of a canvas circle. This means, a certain area of every canvas roll Resh paints will have a circle. This is called 'The Circle of Life'. It means if you submit early, it assures your art is added to the very first circle of the canvas. Sort of like a 'first come first seat' basis.
9. HOW DO I KEEP TRACK OF MY ART BEING SHARED?
Follow Val Resh on social media.
10. WHAT IS THE STORY SUBMISSION FOR?
When you upload your image, you will also tell us your inspiration behind it - in 500 words max.
Longer story submissions are an extension of your narrative of 1500 words max. This will be then curated & published with our sponsor The Red Door for the quarterly e-zine. This is optional.
11. I AM FINDING IT DIFFICULT TO FILL UP THE FORM. IS THERE ANOTHER WAY I CAN SUBMIT?
Yes, just WhatsApp your entry according to the same questions in the form or email at
12. CAN I SUBMIT OLD WORK?
Yes, so long as it meets the requirement of the themes, & Terms and Conditions.
13. I WANT TO SUBMIT TWO, BUT I AM WORKING ON THE SECOND PIECE STILL. SHOULD I SUBMIT TOGETHER?
You can submit the piece that is done first and submit the second piece later using the same form.
14. HOW IS MY IMAGE GOING TO BE USED BY THE ARTIST? WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
Imagine a large piece of paper. On this piece, the artist (Resh) will find elements from your image of which she will sketch/paint out. Your name & location will be hand painted by her next to it. This process will continue as she adds elements from images others have shared with her. Thus, it won't be a copy work, a pasted transfer nor will she misuse your content. She will merely try and reflect it in her own style while combining it with those of others.
Please do read the Terms & Conditions properly.
15. WILL I GET PAID FOR SUBMITTING MY WORK?
No. This is a free submission call out for people across the world to come together. Unlike most art callouts, there is a fee to participate. Shared Consciousness gives out a downloadable postcard by the artist of which you can print, with the option to be published and for your name to be added alongside countless others of which Resh will single handedly paint.
